A common misconception about the hearing impaired is their inability to experience the joy of music. They may not hear and process sound audibly but they certainly can feel it. In fact, studies have shown the sense of touch is heightened allowing them to perceive music in a totally different way. SOUNZZZ is a visual, audio, tactile MP3 player designed for the hearing impaired but universal enough for all to enjoy.

Sound is translated into a series of vibrations. One hugs the device to feel the music and it even plays an equalized light show along with the sound. A very unique device I would love to see on store shelves.

Off late we have seen a flood of designs which bring out ways to make life easier for the sight impaired. A few good examples are the Braun Bell Mug, Touch Color Digital Braille Drawing Board, and The Universal Phone. These designs inspired me to compile a list from YD’s archives, dedicated to the Blind. Here’s a look at Ten Innovative Designs To Help The Sight Impaired.

10) Siafu PC by Jonathan Lucas

Lucas’s design gives the blind a fair chance to explore the world of computers in a limitless way. A conceptual material called magneclay or magnetized liquid possessing limitless morphing capabilities forms the base of this design.

9) B-Touch mobile phone Zhenwei You

B-Touch is an iPhone kinda phone with a Braille interface, voice systems and programs to function as regular phone, navi-system, book reader and object recognizer.

8 ) Bright-F by Lifeng Yu

The Bright-F detects the brightness, saturation, and hue of colored fabrics, thereby allowing a blind person to literally pick his choice of color. It relays the color information via a voice feedback.

7) Braille Label Maker by Soonkyu Jang, Jieun Seo & Seung-un Kim

The Braille Label Maker spins out Braille labels so that one can stick it to the relevant items in a grocery store. A very practical solution to an everyday problem. It can be used for labeling many other items as well.

6) The Visual Assistance Card by Kyle Lechtenberg

A brilliant concept that helps keep confidential information confidential! Like when you use a debit card, you need to punch in some secret numbers, but for the blind folks this could be a problem. The Visual Assistance Card lays on top of the debit/credit card reader and through the use of Braille imprinted on the card, the user is able to keep their personal information private thus increasing their independence while shopping in any store.

5) Braille Interpreter by Hyung Jin Lim

It’s always assumed that if a person is blind, he will know how to read Braille. The truth of the matter is, there could be some sight-impaired persons who don’t know Braille. This Braille Interpreter is for such folks.

4) Braille E-Book by Seon-Keun Park, Byung-Min Woo, Sun-Hye Woo & Jin-Sun Park

EAP is a technology that can dynamically change the surface pattern by way of an electromagnetic signal – simulating Braille text. Thus developing a Braille E-Book doesn’t seem a tall order. Not only will it be easy to carry, but also cut down on the thick Braille Books.

3) Voice Stick by Sungwoo Park

Voice Stick is an advance optical character recognition scanner designed to scan books and read to you in a pleasant voice. It converts texts in books, newspapers, contracts, mail, business cards, etc., into voice information.

2) Swatch Sens by Arnaud Lapierre

Swatch Sens is a ceramic ring clock with the 12 hour point marked with Braille. It has two rings, one for the time and the other to set an alarm. The design is simple and easy to understand, and can be really useful.

1) Rubik Cube For Blind by Zhiliang Chen

This specialized Rubik Cube has six different basic materials: Metal, wood, textile, rubber, plastic and stone. Different textures make it easy for the Blind to comprehend and play a joyful game!

The camera is one gadget that gets me jittery. We have come a long way from the pin hole to the digitalized era; but the abundant options and navigations in the current ones leave me all confused. One time, I almost managed to ruin my African Safari photographs coz I forgot to switch the focus from manual to automatic! However, here is a look at ten concept cameras for the future that are conspiring to leave me as the amateur photographer, while you folks become the pro.

10) The Canon Snap by David Münscher

A single button interface and small enough to fit like a ring, this camera is for those whimsical sorts who upload every moment of their lives on social sites. Almost like a finger’s point of view!

9) Flying Stick Camera by Tsunho Wang

Using kinetic energy to power it, the Flying Stick is like those fascinating straw helicopters we used to get at the beach. Rub it between your palms and whoosh it away! I’m sure it will capture your bald plate perfectly!

8 ) Triops Digital Camera by Franziska Faoro

Don’t want a chopper camera, no worries play catch with it. Three protected fisheye lenses capture the moments of joy in a panoramic way, every time you throw these beauties.

7) Samsung SS700 by Jin Woo Han

Wow, imagine a camera that doubles up as a display. Imagine the amount of money you will save on those digital photo frames! Wow!

6) Touch Sight by Chueh Lee, Liqing Zou, Ning Xu, Saiyou Ma, Dan Hu, Fengshun Jiang & Zhenhui Sun

A digital camera for the visually impaired sounds like an oxymoron to me! Jokes aside, the Touch Sight has a lightweight, flexible Braille display sheet which displays a 3D image by embossing the surface. Neat, very neat!

5) Fun Camera by Jian Guan

Adding the fun element to the art of photography, this camera will give us a fisheye distortion view of the pics that we take. You can even click funny pic of yourself thanks to its magnifying glass iteration.

4) Skyros by Siddharth Kambe & Dipti Hanako Kambe

From the heavens above…or more closer, say 120 feet and then all the way back to its base; Skyros captures images at regular intervals and brings them back for you. Almost like hooking a cam to a boomerang, only this one flies up further and is safer.

3) eXtreme Compact Digicam by Camillo Vanacore

An all-weather, all-terrain coolpix camera, answer to my prayers?

2) Panoramic Digital Camera by Hye-Jeong Yang

Ok, so we recounted cameras that fly, soar and even one which we can throw. So let’s do a different motion, how about one that spins and captures all that it sees on the trip?

1) USB Digital Camera by Sungwoo Park

This no-fuss-pot is my kinda camera, click it…load it and view it. Simple as that!

Is cleanliness really next to godliness? I dunno about you but I feel we have more messed up brains than trashy trashcans around the bend! Anyways, here’s a look at some really unusual and freaky concepts and designs that make the garbage bin a prized possession.

10) Crevasse Prep Sink by Anne Kitzmiller

A classy kitchen sink with an integrated garbage disposal is like HEAVEN! Sophisticated and uber-chic, this sink-disposal system was designed with the collaborative efforts of Kohler. The sink uses Active Touch technology to function; the rinse cycle is indicated by a constant blue glow and the synchronized garbage disposal cycle is indicated by a flashing blue glow.

9) Table of Trash by Marie-Louise Gustafsson

How about sweeping the trash off the table and straight into the bin?

8 ) BIN Concept by Faris Elmasu

An 18 liter trash can that incorporates a motorized sweeper into its system, convenient! The sweeper tucks into the front of the trash can when not in use, thereby charging as well. Looks neat functions well, what more can you expect out of a garbage bin!

7) Trash Bin by Denis Oh

Forget the hazards of a tapering mouth for a bin, these Bongsudae (Korean smoke alarm towers) inspired beauties deserve a place on the pedestal and not some dusty corner of a room.

6) Flexibin by Li Jianye

Not much on the design aspect but the Flexibin scores high on application. Invert a discarded grocery bag around it and the bin is ready to be used!

I still have to figure out why I would need to freeze my garbage, but for Cem’s sake I’m willing to try.

Let’s kill the garbage even if its dead! Stomp it, and stomp it good.

This one is a really amazing concept that allows you to be eco-conscious to the T. In case you don’t know which recycle bin your waste item goes to, just swipe its barcode across the scanner and the correct bin opens up. Cool cool style!

From the collection of 10 items in it’s the list, the integrated dustbin concept is by far the best. A trapdoor design conceals the bin till you don’t require it. Moreover the clever idea of using discarded plastic bags to hold the trash is super!

You’ve got all this scrap paper. You’ve got so much of it. What should you do with it? Reuse it. Reuse it until it glows in the dark. With “Paper * Paper” you’ve got not only a thermal binder that makes you some quickly bound books, the package can be completely used up with the machine! No waste! The box makes the product: inexpensively constructed books.

Check out this thing here. It’s a thermal binder. You know what that’s all about? It basically makes quick “perfect bind” books with a slip of paper with glue on it to hold a stack of paper together. With this particular machine you’ve got the green, got the green.

I said that and I’ll say it again. Stomping. Design is best with stomping. If you have to stomp to make the device work, then it’s good. Unless it’s a television. This is what you throw the tiny broken tv into. Then you stomp it. With the ironically titled “Armstrong Bin” compression dustbin, you can compact your trash and get a total thumbs up from the earth that the garbage is inevitably going to fill up!

Kidding! The title is actually very clever with the concept. It’s Armstrong like Neil Armstrong, aka the first man to stomp on the moon. The Armstrong dust bin aims to be the first cleverly named step in reducing the space taken by the garbage we just do not stop making!

Stomp it. Stomp it and KILL it.

Listen, we all love Sungwoo Park here, don’t deny it. There’s been more than one satisfied reader here on Yanko when it comes to Sungwoo. But this time, the reader took an extra step and became an inspired advocate for action. This reader cum designer, Jerome Demers, took the Sungwoo Energy Seed concept and made it DIY and desktop sized. Don’t you want to play along with the “dead” batteries too?

The parts used to make this contraption are intuitive: metal plates, plastic to hold the batteries in place, margarine container for the base, but here’s the important part; the circuit ingredients:

Parts you will need:
1 meter of white and 1 meter of black wirewrap wire 30 or 28 gauge
1 x Ferrite bead digikey part number 240-2145-ND
40 x High power LED
1x 1K resistor
1x 2N3904 or 2N2222 NPN transistor

These are put together to make what’s called a Joule Thief. This is a fun and amazing little amalgamation that makes use of left-over juice in batteries that you’d otherwise throw away because they’ve got little-to-seemingly-no power left. They almost always have a bit of juice that you can access using the right formula. Hood a thief up to an LED light, and WHAMO! You’ve got a nice little environment helper.

Check below and at at Demers’ Instructables entry for further details and instructions. Watch the movie for words from Demers himself.

The most important part of this story is, of course, that he was inspired by a Yanko entry. Yanko! Yes, Yanko, bringing the conceptual industrial design world together, one post at a time.

Thank you very much Jerom Demers! Well played!

We all know alkaline batteries are really bad for the environment if you don’t dispose of them properly. The right thing to do is send them to special recycling centers but hundreds of tons end up in landfills where their toxic innards seep into the earth. Perhaps a good solution is the Energy Seed, an LED lamp post powered by trashed alkaline batteries.

The idea is to encourage people to throw their batteries away into the Energy Seed. There’s a slot for nearly every size battery. The unit combines any left over juice from all the batteries to power a super efficient LED ring.

Of course once the bins are full, we’re left with the same original problem. Somebody has to collect all those spent batteries and recycle them.
